Dry Run — Privacy Policy & Terms

Dry Run is a rehearsal app for high-stakes conversations — asking for a raise, countering a job offer, pricing freelance work. It listens while you practise and coaches how you sound. It is published by Adam Gumm, an independent developer.
It is a communication rehearsal tool. It is not a licensed financial advisor, an employment lawyer, or a career agency, and it does not attempt to be. See Not legal or financial advice below.
The short version
- Your voice never leaves your phone. Microphone audio is processed on your device using Apple's on-device speech framework. It is not uploaded, streamed, backed up, or transmitted anywhere — not to us, not to a scoring service, not to an AI provider.
- Your numbers never leave your phone. Your target salary, your
walkaway, the offer on the table, your rate — all of it stays on device. The AI
counterpart is not enabled yet, so right now nothing you say is sent anywhere at
all. When it ships, every number will be replaced with a
<NUM>placeholder before any text leaves your device, so the AI never sees a figure. - All coaching runs on device. The five delivery signals — your anchor, your hedge rate, the silence you held after your ask, your pace, and your concession language — are computed locally from your own speech. Nothing is scored in the cloud.
- No account, no tracking. No sign-up is required. There is no analytics SDK, no advertising SDK, no third-party tracker, and nothing that ties a device or a session to your identity.
- Audio is discarded when a round ends, unless you explicitly save the session — in which case it stays on your device.
- Three network calls exist, described in full below. None of them carries your audio, your identity, or a salary figure.
Data we collect
We collect nothing. There is no server belonging to Dry Run holding your data, because there is no account system and nothing is uploaded for storage.
What the app keeps, it keeps on your device:

Saved sessions contain salary figures, so they are gated behind your device's biometric lock. Deleting the app deletes all of it; there is no copy anywhere else to request or erase.
Third-party network calls
1. Apple — on-device speech model download
The first time you use Dry Run, iOS may need to download the on-device speech recognition model for your language. This is a request to Apple, handled by the operating system, and it carries no audio and no content from your rehearsals — it is a model download, not a transcription request.
Because of this, the first launch requires an internet connection. Every launch after that works fully offline, including transcription and all coaching.
2. The AI counterpart (not enabled yet)
As of the date at the top of this page, this network call does not happen. The opponent you rehearse against runs entirely inside the app and makes no network requests at all. Nothing you say is transmitted anywhere.
When the AI counterpart does ship, this is exactly how it will work, and this section will be updated to say it is live. The app will send only the text of what you said, with every number removed, and receive the counterpart's reply. Before any request leaves your device:
- Every numeric token — spoken or written, digits or words — is replaced with
<NUM>. "I'd like to move my base to 92" would be transmitted as "I'd like to move my base to<NUM>." - No audio is included. Only text.
- No account identifier, device identifier, name, or email is attached.
The AI provider will be named here before that feature is switched on.
The scripted opponent that ships inside the app will remain available whether you are offline or simply prefer not to use the AI one. Every core feature — transcription, the live delivery meter, all five signals, and a full rehearsal — works in that mode.
3. Apple — purchases
Subscriptions and one-time unlocks are processed by Apple through the App Store using StoreKit. Adam Gumm never sees, receives, or stores your payment details. Apple's handling of that transaction is covered by Apple's own privacy policy. The app checks your entitlement locally against the receipt on your device.
Microphone and speech permissions
Dry Run asks for two permissions:
- Microphone — required. There is no product without it; the entire app is a measurement of how you sound.
- Speech Recognition — required by iOS to use Apple's speech framework.
You may see Apple's standard system text stating that speech data may be sent to Apple for processing. That text is written by Apple and appears for every app that uses the speech framework. Dry Run requests on-device transcription, so your rehearsal audio is processed locally on your iPhone. You can revoke either permission at any time in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security; the app will stop recording and tell you what it can no longer do.
Not legal or financial advice
Dry Run helps you practise how you communicate. It does not give advice about your specific job, offer, employer, client, or contract.
Nothing in the app — including the AI counterpart's replies, the scripts, the Comeback Deck, and any coaching feedback — is legal advice, employment advice, financial advice, or a recommendation about a decision you should make. The AI counterpart is a rehearsal partner playing a role; it is not an expert, it does not know your situation, and it can be wrong.
No outcome is promised or implied. Practising a negotiation does not guarantee a raise, an improved offer, continued employment, or any other result. Decisions about your compensation and your employment are yours, and you should consult a qualified professional — an employment lawyer, a licensed financial advisor — where the stakes warrant it.
No warranty
Dry Run is provided "as is" and "as available," without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including any warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, non-infringement, or accuracy of any content. To the fullest extent permitted by law, Adam Gumm disclaims all liability for any damages arising from the use of, or inability to use, Dry Run.
Children's privacy
Dry Run is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect information from anyone under 13. There is no account system, so no personal information is collected from any user regardless of age.
Changes to this policy
This policy may be updated as the app evolves. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page will change to reflect the most recent revision. Material changes will be described in an app release note.
